Chinese New Year began on 14th February 2010, marking the start of the Year of the Tiger, 4708 on the Chinese Calendar, also known as the Spring Festival. It is the main Chinese festival of the year and not celebrated as a religious event.
Here are some of the traditions and stories linked to this celebration.
As the Chinese use the Lunar calendar for their festivals the date of Chinese New Year changes from year to year. This date corresponds to the new moon (black moon) either late January or February. Traditionally celebrations last for fifteen days, ending on the date of the full moon, with the public holiday in China lasting for three days.
The Chinese zodiac follows a twelve year cycle, with each year being named after an animal. The Chinese believe that people born under a particular sign/year take on the characteristics of the animal calibrated with that year.
Tiger
The characteristics of people born under this sign are said to be sensitive and adventurous. Confident risk takers that dislike taking orders. Good at seeing problems, but not as successful at solving them. Tiger born often seek a shoulder to cry on when feeling down, but are warm and generous to the people they love.
